The Budapest-Bamako is a rally that goes from Budapest to Bamako (Mali-Africa) through the Sahara, organized by a group of Hungarians.
The Budapest-Bamako was inspired by the Paris Dakar Rally, offering the same sense of adventure and the romance of Africa, like the most famous race did in its early editions. The race is open to everyone who can join the event with a street legal vehicle.
The goal of the rally is also raising money for local charities in Mali.
In 2008 the Budapest-Bamako's charity objective is “Adopt a village” or “Help a school”. Every team will be assigned an African village. The team have to visit that village and bring medicine, toys, school supplies, children’s' clothing, etc.
Despite the recent cancellation of the Dakar due to terror threats and security concerns in Mauritania, 150 teams and more than 400 participants from all over Europe left for the Sahara on Saturday 12th January from Budapest's Parliament and reached the finish line located in the capital of Mali on Sunday 27th. The third edition of this event followed a route that makes its way through Hungary, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania and Mali for a total 7.632km.
